The desistance/reintegration research program will focus on serious and persistent offenders who are released from prison on parole, released under supervision from forensic hospitals, and otherwise released into the community
The vast majority of violent offenders and forensic patients eventually return to the community. Any gains made through effective assessment, formulation and intervention can quickly be lost if holistic support is not given in the transition and reintegration period
Moreover, enduring change is unlikely without supporting change and opportunities in a person’s social and systemic environments. Relative to the preceding two research programs, less is known about this area. This is also an area where the research will extend well beyond psychological factors and interventions to consider the social, cultural, and environmental elements necessary for safe reintegration.
